Probably alot of you already know this, but if your NES is blinking and you've tried cleaning the cart and the unit without results, you need to replace the 72 pin connector. If you have never called Nintendo before, call the 1-800 number and ask them to send you a new one. They will-free of charge. I called this morning and mine's on the way! Thanks, Nintendo :D
BTW, this tip was passed on from Mike @NESPlayer.com. I found this site thru johnlmooney's post. Thanks John!

I wonder if they will ship 6 to me... I have 6 NES machines that blink 8)
The seventh already has its 72 pin connector replaced and it works great... It is a real pain to get games out though afterwards... I don't know if any of you noticed... The old connector must have been very worn away because it used to come out in a breeze now it takes a good deal of effort to get it out...
...Or maybe I just have the strength of a woman.

I got my free connector in the mail today! I'm gonna install it tonight, but first I might wanna think about hitting the gym. I wouldn't want to be stuck playing the same cart forever!

I called nintendo. They said that they have nothing to do w/ the connector part, since its an internal piece. Unless you tell me the phone number to call and who to talk to I wont believe you. I tried to call 1-800-255-3700; if I messed something up- let me know. Do you know what store I can find the pin 72 connector in (besides eBay)?

The number on the bottm of my NES is 1-800-422-2602. This is for Nintendo of America. Tell them I said it's O.K. You might have to play it up a little, i.e., you've owned your NES since new, always been a faithful Nintendo customer, was on your way out to the store to buy a gamecube, etc. If that doesn't work, you could try the following link : fhttp://mcm.newark.com/NewarkWebCommerce/mcm/en_US/support/catalog/productDetail.jsp?id=83-3785
They sell connectors for 6.99.
Hope this helps :)

Yes... I had some trouble replacing it too...
I first attempted it but in the middle of it I had to go eat dinner and being a fool, I placed the new connector and the old connector right next to each other... So when I came back to finish it up I ended up reinstalling the old connector and I put the system back together and there was no difference...
I procrastinated trying it again because I cut up my hand on that metal shield piece that sits over top of the cartridge bay. I forgot about it for about 10 months before I finally found the new connector sitting behind my desk... It works fine now.

Thanks for the help. So if I need to give them your name, who are you? A couple of friends and I have been trying to beat Contra, but it keeps locking up on us. Acutally, in our dorm room we have an NES, SNES, and 64 all hooked up that we've been playing a lot. Thanks again.

Actually, I was joking. They don't know me any better than they know you. But seriously, here's exactly what I did. I called them up, told them I had an NES and I was the original owner. I told them I was having horrific blinking problems and had cleaned all my games and the NES repeatedly but kept having problems. I told them that I had heard that they would send you a connector for free. The woman I was speaking to intially was a little dubious at first and said she wasn't sure if they still stocked the part or not. She also asked if I knew how to replace it or not. I told her I was familiar with the system. They said they had the connector and would send it out UPS.
BTW, I installed my new connector last night. It is actually alot looser than the one that I replaced. So far it works great, and my kids are fighting over it right now, even though each of them has their own PS1. I don't know if Froggerman is pulling our legs or not about his being so hard to remove carts.

Great. Now put that controller down and hit the books!!! Haha, just kidding!

No I am not pulling any legs. ;)
Maybe it is just my connector that is "tight".
Okay so maybe I was exaggerating a bit when I said that it takes "a great deal of effort" to remove the game... But there is a definite difference from how it used to be and how it is now.

Or IN YO FACE!!!!!, perhaps? Yeah, it is kinda like playing with them a little bit, but it was just too good a tip not to pass along to others. I wonder if someone at Nintendo is wondering where the F*** all the requests for the free connectors are coming from! But it also promotes alot of good will for the company. Hopefully they have a warehouse full of connectors!

Yeah, I got my replacement pin from Nintendo the same way. However, I still wasn't able to stop the blinking grey screen, so I will buy a top loader. When I can afford one.

Guess whose back? Ok, lets catch up. If you have replaced your connector and it still blinks, CLEAN YOUR GAMES!! I know you probably have already but sometimes you have to do this repeatedly. I got a SEGA from a garage sale(I know this thread is about NES but it applies so please bear with me). The SEGA worked great for a little while but then completely stopped. I thought several things were wrong with it before I realized that cross contaminatoin was going on between carts. After many, many cleanings everyting worked fine. You should probably clean your carts every few times after playing, or before you put it in your NES if its been a while since you played it. These things can be tempermental sometimes but you just have to grit your teeh and be patient.
As for calling Nintendo and being told you have to send your machine out, well , if you read my earlier posts, you have to tell them the right things. try calling them back. You might get a different operator. Tell them your cousin in Peoria got one for free, why can't you? It might take a few times but you should be able to get one, provided they still are stocking them.
Also make sure you clean your games before trying them in your new connector!!

Welcome back Anntiques!
One thing should be pointed out:
If you get a used game from a thrift store or a garage sale or some other place: CLEAN YOUR GAME BEFORE YOU PLUG IT INTO YOUR NES!!!!
