This is a newly released game from CAPCOM and promises to being back the glory of the old school G'NG game(s), with a new look. Much like Nintendo did with New Super Mario Bros.
The main premise behind the game is pretty simple; fight the bad guys, save the girl. There are six levels of platforming greatness to run through, each with its' own, very unique, look. The levels aren’t anything break-thru, and stick to the tried and true platform goodness.
From the startup, you'll be greeted with a story intro that breaks down why you are about to play though the game. It's not too deep, but gives you the basic storyline. After this, you'll get to feast your eyes on a cut-scene that shows our hero running from left to right, avoiding a few obstacles, and ultimately being face-to-face with what seems to be the main baddy in this title. The cut scene is well done, and looks fantastic on the PSP screen.
Next, you'll be told about the save file, continue or not ? etc. Now we're at the title screen. You have three choices, NEW GAME, LOAD GAME, and OPTIONS. Pressing NEW GAME brings you to the next sub-menu for the difficulty selection. Again, three choices; NOVICE MODE, STANDARD MODE, and ULTIMATE MODE. I chose NOVICE MODE for the time being.
Next up ? Another small cut scene, then your are redirected to a sample of the upcoming level. The gameplay isn’t that fast, but you are almost instantly bombarded by enemies. Fighting is fairly simple. You run from sided to side using the d-pad, pressing various buttons that correspond to their attack, jump, etc. There is a ton of baddies in each level. I hate to see how hard this thing is on Ultimate Mode lol. Another note on the control scheme. You can't manipulate your jumps in mid-air, ala Mario. You also have to be pressing right or left on the dpad, or you'll jump straight up.
Once you've started, you'll enter the level with a suit of armor, and a lance as your primary weapon. These lances are tossed, and are unlimited. You'll get power ups, new weapons, shields, different armor, and more, throughout each level. Running into, falling on, etc., and enemy will leave you naked. By the time you've reached the end of the first level, you should have picked up a few armor upgrades. This will enable you to take more than a measly two hits before brandishing your undies. Needless to say, running around in your pretty little boxers is the last step before your demise should you be struck again. You'll get to see something different from the old school GNG, SHIELDS ! You will be able to block attacks using a shield, in combination with pressing down on the d-pad. Some shields will give you the ability to fly for a short period of time, or replenish your magic powers with a successful block. You'll also be able to pick up a dozen, or so, weapons during the course of the game. So far, I've used the lance, scythe, burning candle, and a whip. Each has it's pros and cons.
Graphics
The graphics are amazing; very bright and colorful. The animation is very smooth, and is also top notch. The level design is pretty simple, it's a side-scroller.
Sound
The sounds are very well done. They sound a lot better with quality buds, than the tiny PSP speakers. Even with the PSP speakers, you'll be treated to very nice music and sound effects.
Control
The controls are very responsive. The character is easy to control, and doesn’t show any signs of lag between a button press and the character response. Navigating through your inventory and such is pretty simple as well.
Fun Factor
While I've only sampled the game thus far, this seems to be a very fun game. As soon as I've played more of it and have more of a feel for the game, I'll update this section.
Now that I've played more of this game, I can honestly say that this is the most difficult game to date. GEEEEESH ! Crank up the difficulty level to ULTIMATE, and get ready to pull some hair lol.
Summary
If you were a fan of the original games, then this should be a must buy for you. If not, well, rent it at least lol. It's a pretty decent game. Well, back to playing !
Here are a few screenshots for ya:
