After a long wait, Ubisoft has finally announced the next game in the Rainbow Six series, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots. The series has shed its traditional naming convention and relocated from Las Vegas—where it has been set on all modern consoles—to, fittingly, New York.
Development on the title is being headed by series veteran Ubisoft Montreal, with support from Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm. Video game developers often create internal “target gameplay” trailers to highlight features, aesthetics, and atmosphere long before the actual game is created. These videos contain no real gameplay footage, and are instead made entirely from pre-rendered scenes. Unfortunately—or fortunately, depending on your point of view—Ubisoft received word that the Rainbow 6 Patriots target gameplay trailer was in danger of being leaked. The company took action, officially releasing the trailer itself and providing a few details about what we’ll be playing when the game hits stores in 2013.
In Rainbow 6 Patriots, Team Rainbow is tasked with eliminating a group of terrorists known as the “True Patriots.” It appears to be a much more personal and brutal game, tackling real-world events like mortgage crisis. Rainbow 6 Patriots will also pose “tough ethical decisions” like whether or not to kill an innocent man to save lives.
Of course, all of the usual Rainbow Six elements are there: sniping, repelling, explosives, cover mechanics, and the rest. There also appears to be some sort of new vision mode, but it’s difficult to tell for sure since it’s not actual gameplay. Whatever the case, Rainbow 6 Patriots looks like it will be an excellent follow up to 2008’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2. We just wish we didn’t have to wait five years between games.
