Yeah so i have been a sony fanboy for pretty much my entire life. But now i am thinking of getting a 360 (I am still keeping my ps3 though) mainly due to the great online and the GTA IV episodic content and Halo and Gears. Anyways, i am wondering what you guys think i should do. I have a friend whose 360 recently broke and rather than send it out to get repaired he chose to buy a new one and leave the broken one to rot in his closet. Well i decided that it would be a cheap way to get a system. So he told me he would sell it to me for $150 (Canadian) and i said ok i guess it is better than $350 for a new one and i just have to send it out for a few weeks (according to accounts i have heard about Microsoft's completely horrible customer service). Anyways i find out he sold his HDD and his controller. So i would have to buy those. So i worked out that it would be about 70 dollars less to get the used one. So do you guys think it is worth it or should i just buy a brand new one?(not getting an elite because im too poor.)
Just need your input. Thanks.

I'd say just go with a new one. You don't exactly know what other problems his 360 might have, and you have a chance of getting a new one that's "supposedly fixed" to never get the red ring.
And the service was odd for me...took me twice as long to get the box than it did to get it fixed and brought back.

I would take up that deal, but it's not worth $150, I would pay $100 tops for a broken 360. Make sure the warranty is not voided before you buy the system, contact microsoft and get the box sent to you for the return before you do anything!
How old is his broken 360? If it is within 60 days some stores will exchange it.

Might as well go with the new one at that point. My turn around for my console when I got the RROD was pretty darn good. I was impressed.

For my first console, it was a week and a half, I think thats a record for them.

Yeah m1ndless i just talked to him and he said he'd lower it to $100. Also it is way longer than 60 days im pretty sure it is like 5 months or something. Also how would i know if the warranty is void didn't microsoft extend all warranty's for like 3 years or something? Also he didn't hack it or anything if that is what you mean.. So you mean i should call microsoft and get the box before i even buy it?

I would suggest that. The box took like a week to get to my house, and the actual I didn't get it back for another 3 weeks. So a month in all.

Ok i might call this weekend then. What exactly do they ask, like do they ask for a serial number or receipt or anything that i would need the system in front of me for?

Oh forgot about that...They do ask for the serial...whats wrong with it blah blah..

Try going to the support center on xbox.com. It's where I did mine out. You basically do all the same stuff you'd do on the phone.....I just find that easier. It's FedEx by the way.
And for the total time for me, about 2 and a half weeks. Way shorter than what I heard/expected.

Just checked and there is a Fed Ex near my airport as well. But would it be different for me being in Canada? Does the box have like the address on it already or something so they know where to send it? I probably sound like a huge noob right now.
i would get something like a console new, but ms has warranty for life right so if anything goes wrong i can get it replaced for free? Iam thinking of buying a used 360.

If you can afford it and have one around you Best Buy and buy the service plan. When it craps out you bring in the old one and they give you a new one no questions asked. I love it

It's been UPS all 3 times for me so far. And the problem with the Best Buy service plan is that once they replace your console your warranty is dead. The MS manufacture warranty transfers to each new console as necessary.

Don't got a best buy i live in canada. I think we're gettin one soon though. Anyways i can technically afford to buy a new one but i would have no money left for games... So i think i am gunna buy it on friday of next week and send it out on saturday.

No, he's going to hang it on his mantle
Do they also throw you firmware into the new console too? Like with the XBLA game rights and such?

Okay so i just called, and got to talk to some guy that i could barely understand because microsoft likes to have their customer service run by people who cant speak english. He was very helpful though. He said something about "*#^$(*#$& in 20 days or your repair request will be cancelled" i think he said if they don't recieve my console by then but im not sure... He also said that i have to remove the faceplate, is that true?

Get a new one. You'll get a 1 year warranty and a 3 year if you get the RROD.
I used to be a Sony fanboy as well. The PS3 is just too damn expensive for me.
