Unless you have been living under a rock the last 7 years you should already know the basics of the Halo franchise. Instead of breaking down the story line I will just jump straight to the review.

[STORY]

Unlike Halo 2 this game has an incredible story to follow. This game picks up right where Halo 2 left off. Another nice new feature are the cutscenes. Instead of watching a boring cutscene Bungie mangaged to make you feel like you are part of the scene. Usually by starting the scene with you in control.

[CONTROLS]

Much like the first 2 games the controls are pretty comfortable. If you have played Halo before then you will feel right at home with this one.

[SOUND]

Again Bungie does an amazing job with the sound effects and music. Cranking out on Dolby 7.1 the sound effects simple sound amazing. I was walking and in the distance I could hear a brute beating up a soldier. At the same time I could hear soldiers talking back and forth behind me. Another cool effect is the bullets. In my front right speaker I can hear a shot fired and make its way behind me hearing the bullet hit something in my rear left speaker. Very nice!

[GRAPHICS]

Obviously much improved over the previous games but what really impressed me was the foliage and water effects. When soldiers or anybody runs through a bush or brushes by a branch you will see the bush or branch react to the person. No longer do you see the characters walk through bushes without the bush moving. The water effects are also done very well. Now dead bodies will float in the water and float down rivers or creeks. Bullet shots or foot steps will create ripples or rings in the water. There is quite a bit of detail in each character and enviorments. Also much improved is the damage. You can shoot helmets and masks off your enemies. You can shoot hub caps off tires and eventually shooting the wheel completely off. A lot more detail to destuction.

[WEAPONS]

Almost all of the old weapons return with the addition of new ones. Weapon balancing is done very well. For example, when you pull a turret off the mount you will have a small supply of bullets for it. Its very powerful and the amount of bullets you get is not enough to just cruise through the level. It will get you past about 10-15 enemies quickly.

[OVERALL]

This is easily the best Halo of the series. But by todays standards this game falls short of a perfect 10. For a single player campaign I rate this game a 9/10. It lacks exploration and once its beat there isnt much reason to play again.

overall single player score - 9/10

I can vouch for you on the surround sound. I was playing today and I got shot at from the left. I seriously felt like the bullet went in my left ear and out my right, lol! It kinda made my ear tickle!
