With the Xbox 360 being limited to DVD capacity it has begun to see games being passed by and headed over to the PS3.
Heavenly Sword takes up 10gb of space. Resistance is another game too big for DVD format. Rockstar signs exclusive with Sony so they can make games with better graphics and longer in general.
Is this the begining of the end for the Xbox 360? 1 year from now will we be cursing Microsoft for using last generation DVD drives for a next generation system? How many other games will the 360 miss out on because of the drive format?
What do you guys think about this? And lets not turn this in to a console war. Lets talk about how you think the DVD format on the 360 will affect the quality of future games.
I honestly feel that Microsoft made a big mistake using this format. Never will we see Gears of War with both better graphics and longer single player campaign. Never will we see games as long as Resistance. Would Bioshock have been a longer game if it was on the PS3? Would we have multiplayer in the game if it were on the PS3? Is Metal Gear Solid 4 not going to the 360 because it just wont fit?
Will the Xbox 360 dissappear and be replaced by the Xbox 360 2?

I have been worried about this too, I think Xbox needs to figure out something quick.
Well, this has been beaten to death already I think.
The xbox 360 will not die because of the dvd-9 format it uses. Developers will still make great games for the 360. Everything has a spin on it, and the Rockstar deal isn't any exception. We see what the PR people want us to read.
When the PS3 actually starts making games that surpass what the 360 has, then I'll believe that the Blu-Ray is being used to an extent not possible with DVD-9.
As far as the question you posed, the quality of games ? The quality of the games available now are amazing, surpassing the quality of games on the PS3. I only see that continuing. While the PS3 tries to tout the BR media as superior, the games that are released aren't ANY indication that the BR media is needed for great games. All the while the games keep coming on DVD-9, and they are great.
There isn't any way NOT to make this a system wars thread when you compare it to the PS3 media and it's capacity.
As long as the games are still good when they are released, I don't care if it comes on a 16mbit cart.

What exactly can they figure out ? The only things that can be done are, multiple discs, or changing the media they use. I don't see any problems with the DVD-9 format. Just look at the games... cmon...

I think they're going to start integrating HD DVD into newer 360's, and start making games on them. Thats what I think they should do.

That isn't going to happen. They'll release a NEW console before they alienate the millions of users already out there.

Ya, amazing and SHORT! You wont get amazing and long with the 360. And this certainly does not have to be a systems war thread. We are talking about the 360 and its future. We already know the PS3 has lots of capacity for whatever it needs to do.
Its a fact that the 360 is missing out on games due to the format it uses. Nothing is going to change this unless Microsoft changes its format.

Opinion on the games length varies though. A lot of people, the majority, said Gears was too short. I loved that game. I didn't have any problems with the length of it.
The facts are simple, sure you'll have limitations on what you can and can't do within a given space. The guys doing PGR4 made a great comment when this rumor surfaced that they had to cut content because of space. They said, with any format you'll have to work within the restrictions presented. With the Xbox 360 they are going to be challenged to make a great game within the limitations of the DVD-9 format. They also said there are many challenges to make a great game on a media that had more storage. It might not be storage related, but you'll always face challenges to make games great given certain hardware to work with.
Maybe I'm too attached to my 360, although I don't consider myself a fanboy of the 360. It does get under my skin a little every time this topic is brought up. I mean, let's make a thread about the PS3 and how they have all this space, and horsepower, and yet, where are the games that showcase these technological advances in gaming ?
Admittedly, the 360 has storage limitations. To say otherwise would be ignorant. I do think, however, that developers that stick with the 360 will still be able to deliver a great game for the users to enjoy.
I also don't see the length of the games keeping people from buying the games.
Also, the 360 hasn't LOST any games because of it's storage limitations.

Though if the triple layer dvds that were in talks get released then that could save the 360 because its drive could read them since they're still dvds couldn't it?
Save the 360 ? Jesus, someone please link me to the news release that has all these developers saying that they can't make games for the 360 anymore.

Xbox 360 - 7GB
PS3 - 19GB
Is there really 12 GB of extra content, gameplay, etc. ?

As of right now the PS3 has no space limitations and this is what the topic is all about. This is about the Xbox 360. We can definately create a thread about the PS3 not performing as well as it should. But it definately doenst need to be discussed in this thread. I will ban you for 3 days if you mention the PS3 again lol.
You mention PGR4 being limited. What if it was on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Those limitations would be removed. I also thought Gears of War was much too short. Same with Bioshock. Gears pushed the system to the limits. As Cliffy B. has stated. Are those the best graphics we will see at the length of a game?
If it were on BR or HDVD, space might not be an issue, but there may have been other technical reasons that they may have to deal with to get the gameplay as good as possible. It seems to be a trade-off.
I can't defend the space limitation of the DVD-9. It's a fact that there is just only so much space. What I am saying is that great games can, and will, be released on the 360. That's all I can say, and anything else is pointless to argue about because it brings in the "other" system.
The 360 has just so much space, and it's up to developers to use that space to deliver a game that people want to buy. End of story. The 360 will not die because of the DVD-9.

he said everything i would have. what a post :)
Well, i did forget to add "GO REDS !" lol
really though. It's going to be a great ride on the 360, no matter what happens with the storage. I've only had this elite since april, and i've had a big time with the games so far.

Oblivion has tons of game play length. I'm not sure how much space that takes up. The graphics are decent and game play is pretty good.

Whats so wrong with multi disc games? back in the days of Final Fantasy and Lunar games, more than 3 discs was like music to your ears. It wouldn't be expensive for m$ to have multiple DVD9 in one case.

Not very likely is it, that extra 12GB of game is probably duplicate data to make up for the slow 2x Blu-ray Drive

Exactly, if a game as massive and varied as Oblivion can fit on a DVD then there should be no problems. With all the expansions included Oblivion only takes up 5.52GB of HDD space on my PC

When I bought the Shenmue games on Dreamcast I definitely felt I was getting value for money, these games were spread across 3 and 4 discs respectively. Swapping discs is such an easy process that it really shouldn't spoil a game. If in a couple of years time Xbox 360 games are spread across 2 or even 3 discs I don't think it would bother me.

If games are shorter that's perfectly alright with me. There are very few games I am not bored with after the first 4 to 5 hours. It seems like consumers are moving toward casual games anyway, not epics.
You would think the PS3 would be at an advantage graphically but I've not seen any game to convince me of this.
If anyone needs to "do something" it's Sony.
The multiple discs scenario was said to be unfavorable because of disc swapping for multiplayer games.

disc swapping sucks. I hated that with final fantasy VII and I hated that with Resident Evil 0 gamecube. Yes I guess we can still have multi discs to get the bigger experience but how many developers are actually going to do that?
And honestly disc swapping was going on as far back as the PS1.......................shouldnt we be past that by now?

4 discs, 3 discs for long game, 1 disc for multiplayer?

i remeber on ps1, metal gear solid (not sure which one) had multiple discs. that didnt stop ps1 owning the dreamcast or n64. so its hard to tell really.

Granted its inconvenient, and just because it was as "far back" as the PS1 doesnt make it outdated in my eyes. But it would easily solve their problems. And yeah, 2-3 discs for the actual game and one for multiplayer sounds good. Could cram a lot of maps on just one disc lol.

I would much rather swap disks than pay for another sony technology that is going to more than likely fall in the next three years or so. Think about all the great "INNOVATIONS" that sony has come up with.

Now blu-ray not to be a fanboy but I agree that we need to press the barriers but how many times can SONY revolutionize the media we use and fail so bad that we always go to what worked before?

Dunno about the US, but in the UK the mini-disc really took off until about 2003-4 when MP3 players made it big.
