This is a review of the Playstation 3's Remote Play feature. Remote play is a feature which gives the owner of a PS3 the ability to access said PS3, over Wifi, either directly, or over the internet, by using a Playstation Portable.

This feature was added so that users could stream content, such as music, pictures, or movies to their portable system. This Remote play does not, however, allow streaming of DVDs, Blu-Ray movies, or games, including Demos, at this time.

Now into the actual review.

Quality (Direct Connection)

Well, quality depends on location. In my house, with a signal above 60% (90% of the house) I could get good picture, and good sound with movies, with minor to no glitching. MP3s played as if they were flowing from a Memory Stick, and pictures showed up flawless and quickly.

Below 60 %, however, I experienced minor to major glitching with video, and even had the PSP lose connection to the PS3. MP3s and pictures, however, played with little to no "buffer" time.

Quality (Over the Internet)

Quality over the internet, again depends on signal. The signal to your PS3 at home, and the signal on your wifi where you are. With ~ 75% signal in both areas, video played with minor to no glitching, and all other media worked fine. I was getting 1.5 mb/s data rate on the video, and only at the start of the video did the screen glitch, and the sound never faltered at all. Music and pictures worked fine, though the visualizations glitched worse than the video. Overall, it's usable, but not good for extended viewing, high bitrate video, or music + visualizations.

Value

Well, it's free, beside the fact that you have to buy the PS3, the wifi, the electricity, and the PSP. So, I'd say it's not bad for an early stage feature.

Overall

Overall, this is best used for music videos, funny clips, mp3s and photo viewing. A high quality movie will have problems, unless you're right beside the PS3, and if you are, you wouldn't need streaming video. As for what's there, I'd give this a 6.5 out of 10. With better compression techniques to stream more data, and the ability to play games, this would easily be a 10, but I doubt that'll ever happen.
