View Full Version : Explained reason why the 360 overheats

This quote comes from someone who has had 8 failed Xbox 360 systems.

"...the problem isn’t just with launch units. Of the 8 I’ve had so far, only 2 were manufactured in the first three months of launch. The last one I had red-ring on me was manufactured in November of ‘06 - a full year after launch.

The problem is that the cooling design of the 360 doesn’t hold up. The cooling of the CPU was well done, with a heat pipe to draw the heat away from the chip (and accordingly, away from the mainboard). The problem is that the GPU and its low-profile heatsink sit under the DVD drive, and are given a very narrow channel for air to be pulled across the heatsink by the fans. When the GPU heats up enough, not only does it reflow the solder in the ball grid array slightly, it can cause the entire mainboard to flex - a phenomenon largely caused by the X-shaped brackets that hold the heatsinks on under the mainboard. They hold the heatsinks down to the chips with a tension fit that presses up directly underneath those chips.

So when the system gets too hot, the combination of loosened solder with a mainboard that flexes from heat causes the GPU or CPU to actually break its connection from the board - resulting in the 3 red lights and secondary error code 0102 (the “unknown hardware error” code).

This is true of ALL systems manufactured thus far, not just the launch systems. Hopefully, Microsoft’s new measure of adding a heatpipe to the GPU heatsink will reduce the heat on the mainboard itself enough to keep this from happening. We shall see."

I think the new heatsink will dramatically improve the 360s stabability. I am looking forward to yet another revision of this system.

I didn't know they were adding a new heatsink? When will this take effect? I want to get an elite.. but I am waiting for something quiter.

Microsoft announced earlier that this fall another revised 360 was going to be released using the 65nm chip. Hopefully they add the new GPU heatsink to that instead of coming out with another one in december lol. I believe it will be the Elite system that is getting the new chip and heatsink.

But people are saying just a new chip will not help cooling..

And im sorry i dilike the way microsoft is doing this, honestly like, If they keep making new 360s , and diff models..Eventually people will stop buying..Like I dont have the money to keep upgrading to different consoles..

They are adding a smaller processor AND another heatsink to the current graphics processor.

Yes i know, but the smaller chip is not gonna help with cooling...

It will just be cheaper for m$ i though?

Also arn't they just going to add the heatsink, to the ones that are being repaired? or no?

that guy is sooooo full of ****. He's an obvious fan boy. I'd like to see all his shipping labels, etc. from Microsoft showing that he's sent that many boxes back to them for repairs. I can believe one or two machines failing, but 8 ? Please... obvious troll. He doesn't provide any proof. I can post something similar that I have had 8 360's that HAVEN'T failed.

This person has taken all types of defect claims and put them into one "theory" of why ALL xbox 360's will eventually fail. What's the time limit then ? If they are all the same, then they should all be failing in a relatively similar time-frame. With 7 or 8 machines failing, this person should be able to narrow down the amount of play time each xbox 360 should have before it fails.

The story is bull****, and another attempt at some lame loser to try and blow the failure rate of the 360 out of proportion.

Or how about they just hook every 360 up to some pipeline to a glacier in Alaska or something ?

EDIT: F34r, vurry niize!

True or not the 360 obviously doesnt have the best cooling. The avg percentage of electronic hardware failing is under 10%. The 360 is close to 40% failure rate. That is just too high. Story may be crap but I would never EVER stick with stock cooling on any 360.

40% ? Are you kidding me ? Where did you get that number from ? There aren't any statistics that will show that there is a 40% failure rate for the xbox 360. I am definitely not saying there isn't a problem. I AM saying there isn't any way that 4,449,764 consoles have failed. that's 40% of 11,124,410. This is the number of consoles reported at nexgenwars.com. If that were the case, there would already be a Class Action law suit filed against Microsoft.
