View Full Version : Why Freepsps or any of the Free* (Gratis Network) = Scam

Seeing as how the idiocy of referral link spammers is rapidly growing I would like to present just why that is and why you shouldn’t get suckered in and why I am immensely annoyed by the whole ordeal.
Gratis Networks (who runs all those free*.com sites) used to carry the etrust logo but it got revoked because they changed their privacy policies without telling anyone (In other words sold your information to various people). There is a huge overhead in terms of how soon your get your item. And assuming you do get your item after a long time everyone after you is screwed. Just think of it as a branching tree. For every person who has received their free item there are 5 or however many they require people after them that will get NOTHING and have signed up. So take this into account with multiple chains of people.
Lets take Freepsps for example
Take a total pool of 600 people.
1 Original Referrer + 5 Suckers (referrals) = 1 PSP
So you calculate this you get 100 People with PSPs in the End and 500 Suckers. And this is the ABSOLUTE Minimum number of people who will NOT receive PSPs. This is only assuming everyone initially is able to get 5 people to sign on. Some may just give up at 4 or lower.
This also explains the large # of scammers who have recently started flooding all sorts of msg boards with this crap. The initial group of people have gotten their stuff (which gratis uses to justify their legality). However you have a huge pool of people who have yet to fulfill their offers. Eventually it's going to burn out and you'll end up with a huge pool of people unable to get anymore referrals and a large population of spammers desperately trying to get referrals. (This is the part that bothers me since I have no problem with retards getting scammed)
Now it's known that pyramid schemes are illegal (though we see tons of them being offered at EBay constantly). What makes this legal? It's simple they offer referrals instead of actually taking your money like other pyramid schemes. It's a relatively simple loophole. And people don't question them because they just flaunt about how some people have received these items. Which they have indeed, at the cost of tons of people below them.
to tell you the truth, i was doing one for the macminis4****.com or something and i did my offer because i wanted blockbuster online anyways, and it said it would take 5 days to go through, so a week later, i went to sign on and my account "no longer exists" hmmm.... dont do those things, point blank period

Lol wow, dude its called trading referrals....i get people to sign up under me for freepsps.com and i sign up for them under whatever site they are working on, and plus for every friend or relative of mine i give them $20 to sign up under me. So they do get something out of it and they are not suckers.

Yes-if you play the game you might get free stuff-meanwhile....the net is filled with spammers, scammers and general ass monkeys trying to get everyone they know and dont know to sign up. Its Amway with ipods.
Just do me a favor and NEVER NEVER bitch about spam cause their argument is.....'well it works!'.
I miss the days when the net was only porn and religion...

Ok one question, if it is such a scam why are people posting that they recieved theirs? And another thing why are you whining? Are you one of the 500 that didn't get yours? Let me tell you a little secret, your little rant is advertising for them. So um if you don't like it don't talk about it. Kind of like when you were younger and a sibling did something that annoyed you the more you whined about it the more the sibling did it, but once you ignored them it went away. So think about what your doing. And another thing my friend got his PSP from that same company today. Only a scam if you aren't getting your piece of the action.

Dude...did you not read any of the posts. YES it works so NO its not a scam BUT it is a pyramid scheme that ends up filling everyones inboxes with spam - SPAM. So "get into the action" and be a loser who profits from something that is ultimatly bad for the everyone. You friend got his..well good for him-happily I dont have to resort to emailing people begging them to become part of something so lame. JUST BECAUSE IT WORKS DOSENT MEAN ITS OK. Duh.

My free PSP from Gratis came in yesterday and i havent noticed an increase in junk mail since joining the site. It really doesnt matter anyway, get gmail, you will never see any junk mail again. and about the people that dont get them, they dont get them because they dont bother to go thru with the offers, they just sign up to help someone. If they really wanted to get it for free, they can, all u need is 5 ppl...they just dont care or dont want it that bad or can afford it.

I got my free psp from Offercentric about 2 weeks ago. The population of newcomers for the freebie community is growing rapidly everyday, so I don't think people are getting scammed because they are definately not running out of people to refer.

more people who simply don't read the posts D:
it's simple, do the math. You got to love how the few people who manage to scam other people have to go out there and claim it isn't a scam. ;)

From what I have seen, its more than just 5 people scammed for every 1 who gets their prize.
A lot of these companies are screwing people into never getting their prize at all. I was reading some guys weblog and, even though he filled out the forms for his "free ipod", the referal site was listing the commitments as not being filled.
So he signed up for a credit card, a dvd service and a bunch of other crap and got screwed anyways.
Yes, some of these sites do work. If you are patient and willing to jump though all the hoops with temporary email accounts, you might get free stuff. But you will pay in the end, either way. Either by being spammed or simply having to spend hundreds of hours tying up loose ends. If you cant afford a PSP, though, it may be your only chance.

I know the scheme is profitable. Me and my friend considered starting a similar scheme with porno sites years ago in college. However we didn't have the time to aggresively approach clients and get the whole ball rolling.

It works out if you read what you are doing and follow the instructions exactly. I also only do that stuff with an email i will never use and an old prepaid cell phone. I also only use that site they were talking about on the news, the one that was actually giving away ipods. Also the ones who do not recieve anything are the people who give referrals that DO NOT sign up. Most people think that they can give anyone as a referral, it doesnt work like that. The referral has to sign up and for the referral to get anything he has to have 5-10 more people sign up AND complete their offers. The companies make big money because they get about $100 for all your offers you must complete, then they get the same amount for each of your 5-10 referrals. Thats how they can give you a free ipod. They make 600-1100 off you and your friends by giving you a free gift that costs around 300. Then on top of that they sell your info, thats where the prepaid cell and the email i will never use come in. and please dont say i didnt read the thread. I used to scam people with "make money from home" stuff.

Pyramid schemes are illegal and get shut down. Gratis is still up and running. Its hella simple, you just complete a offer and have 5 friends complete a offer thats it! I only ended up paying about $23 in all. Just got my lovely psp today for only $23 compared to the $270 all of you paid for it. Now i can get a 1gb mem card and some games :D

Its like this
You >> Five Friends
Your friend (if he wants a psp) >> Five Friends
and so on, it only costs you 6 referrals, The 1 from you when you sign up for the site and the 5 from your friends.
You do blockbuster ---> five of your friends do blockbuster online
its really simple actually :D

I was listening to loveline tonight and adam carolla but it the best he said... there are people out there who just plain dont care about others, if you gave these people a choice between a new mercedes or a boat turning over and 100 innocent people dying they'd ask if the boat accident was traceble back to them when you replied no it would be untraceable they would hop in the mercedes and let 100 people die... it went something like that, towards the end i got home so i turned of the radio, but its the same idea, you crap on 5 people to get what you want... pretty weak if you ask me, i would never try and get a friend or family member signed up in any of this

I tried it, and couldn't get five referrals. Boo hoo. That just induced me to go out and actually buy the thing (in this case, a PSP).
People get so bent out of shape over the stupidest crap.

if you buy one from the store don't you overall feel "better" having that item then scamming? I do. It makes it feel like that Item is higher quality to me for some reason.
