If you have any dead pixels and are going to return/exchange it, be careful about using this as the excuse. Apparently Sony changed the policy on dead pixels from the Japan launch and doesn't acknowledge any amount of dead pixels as being a problem.

From page 13 of the US release manual, "Red, blue or green spots (bright spots) or black spots (dark spots)may appear in certain locations on the LCD screen. The appearance of such spots is a normal occurrence associated with LCD screens and is not a sign of a malfunction. LCD screens are made using a highly precise technology. However a very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels exist on each screen. Also, a distorted image may remain on the screen for several seconds after the system has been turned off."

So, dead pixels are just part of the design now for PSP... not sure if they expect us to pay extra when when we find one without any flaws.

Fortunately, mine has some strange 'dimples' on the screen as well so I shouldn't get much hassle when I return it this weekend. All the BestBuys in Chicago still have a ton of stock so I'm not sure if I should keep trying for one I'm happy with or just wait 'til the next batch.

i tried to return mine today to bestbuy, with dead pixel excuse.
they said they only exchange psp with at least 11 dead pixel, i failed to convince them that i have 11 (forgot to put the pics you guys posted in this thread in my memory stick), but anyway....after a long wait they decide to let me do the exchange, went home, open the PSP, and find out that the replacement is even worse, so im pretty much farked now

OK well the first PSP i got took it home and the dang thing was stuck pixel ridin. There was about 50 stuck pixels on the bottom right hand corner. But the awesome dudes at FYE let me get a new one and try it before i left and this on only has 1 stuck pixel. Im happy now.

the exact same thing happend with me... i had about 7 dead ones right in the middle of the screen and various other ones in the top left corner. I brought it back to FYE today and got an exchange no problem, and they let me test the new one out in store. NO dead pixels, im also happy. Now.

How big or small is the dead pixel? So far mine is ok (I think). I do however have some micro small black dots. It could be dust particles under the screen.

I have one little black dot.. I didnt notice it until the test but now I cant not notice it > <

If I move the psp around its not in the same spot meaing its a little peice of dust or something

I have one TINY red dot in the bottom left area. I don't notice it when playing.. it's not bright or anything so I can only see it on a black screen.

I don't have my PSP with me, so I can't do the test, but it has one dead (always on/red) pixel in the lower right. I guess I could consider myself lucky, but I still intend to try an exchange. I'll run the test when I get home, but I don't expect to find any other problems.

Edit: well, I was wrong, I have 3.

Load a game or image with an all black screen or an all white screen. That should tell you. I haven't downloaded the test but I know I have a few dead pix here and there.

I downloaded the pixel test and onto my psp. How do I get it to work?

Put in in your photo folder and go to photos on your PSP. Flip through the pictures till you get to the color ones. The dead pixels should stick out bright as day.

I did the test on my PSP. I think i got 2 right next to each other.. :? . Their only visible when the screen is black and there toward the bottom right corner so its not much of a problem.

Had about 4 or 5 dead pixels on my PSP, returned it to TRU but not without first getting into a debate about the temperature I used the PSP in. Apparently TRU sent out a company-wide e-mail saying temperature changes and direct light are what cause dead pixels, which somehow makes the unit non-returnable even with the warranty that I purchased. Oh wow, we don't want TRU to lose out $250 on the sale. What's that faint sound I hear? I believe its the world's smallest violin.

Long story short, second PSP I prayed ever so hard for it to be perfect. It passed the dead pixel test with flying colors. There is a little trace of dirt or something inside the screen but its no biggie.

Is there way to tell if I have dead pixel's syndrome without DL the test?

What I did initially was to go into the settings menu, system settings, then About PSP. the black screen should be up long enough for you to catch any pixel corpses.

Hey Zoglog, I have been meaning to ask you, why did you take away your other sig? The one with the 2 random guys doing the '' Super Woot Woot Hip Hop Dance Extreme Deluxe Fantasmical Dance''? Did Defender make you take it off 'cause it was taking up too much space?

No dead pixels on mine, I have a second shipment US version so I was hoping the bugs would be worked out! It is possible over time to develop dead pixels however in any LCD screen and for Pixels to be hyperactive occasionally not working then working especially if you have it in close range of anything magnetic such as unsheilded stereo speakers.

uuuhhhhggggg

I picked up a psp last weekend and it has four pixel problems(1 dead and 3 stuck)

I tried the vid for hours and no luck, so I rolled back into game crazy to exchange and they said NO you have to send it to sony.

WTF! I went to 2 stores to discuss and got the same answer.

I explained how it was a defective unit and was only a couple days old, so give me another one please......

They acknowledged it was defective and said they where told not to take back any PSP's period and to have the customers contact sony. They told me that was what sony told them to do.

Man what a drag! I just bought this product and now I have to send it to sony for repair!

I learned to make this kind of purchased from the big retail chains from now on. Should have went to wall-mart damit!!!!!!!!

So much for the customer is always right theory!!!

-frustrated

GQBalla
06-19-2005, 12:40 PM

just that it had dead pixels?

what reason did you use to try to get a exchange??

just that it had dead pixels?

I just told them I had a defective unit with a bad screen and I didn't even use the word pixel. I even asked for money back and I got a big NO because the box was opened.

Thinking I may buy one at a store with a real exchange policy then send mine to Sony for repair or whatever. Only to return the other when mine returns from Sony. I hate to do that shit, but why should I be screwed (without my psp for a week or so) for a defective unit I just payed for like new?

-still frustrated, but very excited about the psp
