It's been more than four and a half years since the Diablo II: Lord of Destruction expansion pack came out, and that time has apparently done nothing to diminish fans' enthusiasm for an unannounced sequel to the action role-playing series.

Even now, the slightest hint of Diablo III's existence is enough to get the Internet buzzing. Whether it's the acknowledgement that Blizzard North employees were working on an unannounced project when the studio was shuttered last August, or the e-mail of a Czech musician claiming to have recorded music for the project, rumors of Diablo III persist, popping up every few months to rile the Blizzard faithful.

This month's riling comes straight from Blizzard itself, which has posted a number of intriguing entries on the jobs section of its Web site. The positions, which were posted yesterday, call for an art director and various leads to join "the team behind Diablo I and II" for "an unannounced PC project."

The job descriptions offer few clues as to the nature of the next project. The lead 3D environment artist position calls for a candidate with a solid grasp of form, color, and light who "has experience modeling and texturing a diverse visual range of characters and creatures." Blizzard's also looking for a lead 3D character artist with "experience modeling and texturing a diverse visual range of characters and creatures" and a lead 3D character animator who has "experience animating both human and non-humanoid characters." The lead 3D character animator position also calls for knowledge of inverse kinematics and other facets of 2D and 3D animation, suggesting that the game will have some detailed visuals. Each position calls for familiarity with 3ds Max, while the lead 3D character animator will also need to know Maya and Character Studio.

Online speculation immediately turned to thoughts of Diablo, a franchise Blizzard has previously acknowledged wanting to continue at some point.

Hopefully this is true

So few developers are sticking to the 2D roots of their earlier games. It's really sad. BUT technology is increasing, so some of these 3D games can actually look as detailed as their 2D predecessors. Not like back in the day, when they would release a 3D game on the PSX, just because blocky polygonal figures were...somehow cool?

Agreed... I used to love these games, but it is definately time for a new one.

Do you guys think that they might make it like WoW or more like the old Diablo games? And which way do you guys think would be funner? And which would be better for Blizzard.

Did you just say funner? Well I think it would be "funner" or more fun if Blizzard kept the same formula with Diablo III. If its not broke dont fix it.

Haha, ok cool. And yes I know its supposed to be "more fun", but I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Apparently it was proper enough that you understood though, well anyways, sorry man.

I don't know which one would be better. They are both good in their own ways. WoW has lots of cool things that Diablo didn't, but then there were things about Diablo that were more fun. Either way, if it ever comes out, it will be a great game.

Look what I found about Starcraft 2

It is a fact that starcraft2.com is owned by Vivendi Universal Interactive Publishing North America, the parent company of Blizzard Entertainment. The website's WHOIS information:

Vivendi Universal Interactive Publishing North America

Phone: 310-431-4000
Email: vuipna-dns@vuinteractive.com

Common sense tells us that the fact that Blizzard owns the domain itself means nothing. It isn't uncommon for game developers to register multiple domains to protect their copyrighted titles in anticipation of a sequel, spin off, or general expansion. All this tells us is that Blizzard intends to "revisit the world of StarCraft" some time in the future, but of course we already know that.

And:
August 24, 2006 - While our meeting with Blizzard Chief Operating Officer Paul Sams today at the German Games Convention mainly focused on The Burning Crusade, the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, we did ask him about what the future holds in store for Blizzard, and specifically about StarCraft 2.

"StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time," Sams told us. "As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2."

While Sams wasn't ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard "will have a major product announcement in 2007," and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment.

In terms of what these games could be, we asked if they would fall in line with the major success Blizzard has had with World of Warcraft. "I want to be clear that we're not just content to be an MMO company," Sams explained. "Some other companies get into the role of making just MMOs, but Blizzard lets the developers pick what they want to work on, and it's not all MMOs."

When asked about StarCraft: Ghost, Sams said that it was on indefinite hold, but that Blizzard wasn't averse to exploring further console development in the future. "We've been up to MS and they've been at our office talking about Vista and 360," Sams said, "and we're certainly excited about some of the tools they have to offer in the console world as well as with Vista and DirectX 10. However, with our own online gaming service, we're going to pick and choose what we want to use; we're going to protect Battle.net and make sure Battle.net ranks supreme."

I'm hoping the rumours for Diablo III are true and I'm watching the Diablo forum and IGN, hopefully it will be as good as the original games.

Working on at least three other unannounced titles... what could they be?
