Throughout the life of the PSP, the struggle has been two-fold. Sony has constantly updated the PSP system software, known as firmware, and homebrew developers have continued to thwart the efforts displayed by Sony. With this struggle, several developers have come together and displayed their genius and released countless downgraders for PSP users. From the early days of 1.50, when US "virgin" users were godly, to the custom firmware Dark_Alex is famed for, there is something for everyone in the PSP world.
This thread will replace all the other downgrader threads that were available on TVG. At the end of the post, I'll provide links to these legacy guides. Please make sure you know what you're doing before proceeding. With these guides, everyone, except the users with PSPs using firmware higher than 3.03, will be able to enjoy their PSP to the fullest.
I have made every attempt to provide complete and accurate information in these guides. However, I do NOT take any responsibility if your PSP gets damaged in any way from using the information provided here. You take sole responsibility for you actions. Whether you followed the guides perfectly, or not. Please read over the information below in it's entirety before beginning. If you have ANY doubts, please feel free to post a question in this thread.
So, let's begin !!
IDENTIFYING YOUR PSP SOFTWARE VERSION
Let's power on the PSP if you haven't already done so. Scroll all the way to the left. Then scroll down to System Settings. Press X. Scroll down to System Information, and press X. You should see this screen:
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/7314/sysinfolb7.th.jpg (http://img182.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sysinfolb7.jpg)
The number by System Software is your PSP firmware version. Now onto the downgrader sections.
DOWNGRADING 2.80 to 1.50
There is the off chance that someone has a firmware version between 1.51 and 2.71. In case those people feel left out, don't fret. Just update your PSP firmware to 2.80, located HERE (http://thislittlespace.com/files/psp/280EBOOT.RAR). Then follow the rest of the steps below.
First, open your UMD drive, and turn your PSP around so that you are looking at the back of the PSP. Check the upper right and left hand corners of the green PCB. If you don't see any numbers printed on the board, you have a TA-079 mother board, and you do NOT have to do the idstorage step. If you see any numbers printed on the green PCB, like the picture below, please make sure you complete each step of the tutorial. Here is the pic:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/6774/ta082sa5.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ta082sa5.jpg)
Notice the writing on the right side, but not on the left. Some PSPs have writing on both, and can be a TA-082 or TA-086 motherboard. There is no 100% way to check without taking your PSP apart. It's safer to just perform the idstorage step. Now that we have that out of the way, let's start.
First you'll want to download the following files:
hen280 - HERE (http://thislittlespace.com/files/psp/hen280.zip)
TA-082 Downgrader - HERE (http://thislittlespace.com/files/psp/ta82downgrader.zip)
After you're done downloading those files, unpack them.
First we'll install the needed HEN280 files. Navigate to where you extracted the contents of the hen280.zip file. You should see a folder named MS_ROOT. Drag the contents of that folder, which is a PSP folder, to the ROOT of your memory stick. Choose Yes to all if it asks.
Now on to installing the downgrader files.
Again, let's navigate to where you extracted the contents of the ta82downgrader.zip file. Once again, you'll see the folder named MS_ROOT. Let's drag the contents of that folder, again the PSP folder, to the ROOT of your memory stick. Choose Yes to all if asked.
You now have the needed files installed to perform the downgrade. Our next step is to run HEN-D. Go to your PHOTO icon, and press X. Go to the HEN280 icon and press X.
Now when you perform the above steps, a few things can happen. Let's go over them.
Your PSP freezes. Reboot the PSP and repeat the above steps to run HEN-D.
Your screen turns RED. This means the files weren't written to the flash. Just restart your PSP, and try again. This can happen several times.
You screen turns BLUE. This means that you have successfully activated HEN-D. The XMB will reboot. You are now prepared for the next step.
After you've successfully activated HEN-D with the above steps, continue here:
Copy the contents of MS_ROOT, from the ta82downgrader.rar file, into the ROOT of your memory stick.
Download the official sony 1.50 update eboot HERE (http://www.talkvideogames.com/showthread.php?t=35189) and rename it to UPDATE.PBP. Place that file in the /PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder.
Run 2.80 HEN if you are not already running it.
If running a TA-082/086 PSP execute the 2.80 idstorage changer. It needs 75% battery. It will change some keys of your idstorage needed to downgrade the ta-082. Then it will exit to the XMB.
Execute the generic downgrade, which will show in the XMB under the GAME icon as "Update X.YX".
After the downgrader is finished, you'll be told to press X to restart the PSP. Go ahead and do it.
After your PSP restarts, you should see a blue screen telling you to press O. Do it, and re-enter your settings.
DOWNGRADING 3.03 TO 1.50
If you happen to be stuck with firmware 2.81 - 3.02, again, here is your salvation. Download the 3.03 update file HERE (http://thislittlespace.com/files/psp/firmware/EBOOT303.RAR).
Next, you'll want to download the following files:
HEN-D for 3.03 - HERE (http://thislittlespace.com/files/psp/apps/303hen.zip)
3.03 Downgrader - HERE (http://thislittlespace.com/files/psp/apps/303dg.zip)
You also need an unpatched version of GTA: LCS. The best way to tell if your GTA: LCS is homebrew compatible is it will have the 2.00 update on it. I'm not sure if it's 100% foolproof, but it's the best way to tell.
Next, we'll start the downgrader process.
Copy the contents of the folder MS_ROOT from the 3.03 downgrader ZIP to the memory stick.
Unzip the 1.50 update to a temporary folder. Rename the EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP and copy it to <pspdrive>:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/ . DO NOT OVERWRITE PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP!
Load GTA LCS.
It should get to loading savegame, then the screen will clear to black and fill with a light blue colour, then the PSP will reset itself (if this does not happen see section below).
Check that HEN is running by going to system settings, then to "System Information" and it should show up as system version 303 HEN.
If it is showing up as HEN then go to the memory stick and
run the x.yz update.
If you have an unpatched TA-082 or higher motherboard, you will beprompted to allow the downgrader to patch your motherboard so it can be safely downgraded. The downgrader will not let you proceed without patching, if your motherboard requires it.
Before the downgrader does anything to your PSP it will ask for you to agree to what it is doing, if you no longer want to continue press the Right Shoulder Button (R-TRIGGER).
Once you have agreed to start the downgrade do not unplug the PSP, or try and restart it.
Once finished the PSP will ask you to press X, and reset itself
If it comes up saying that the settings are corrupt, press x to continue, this will mean you will need to re-enter the settings for network connections into your PSP: Load the included NetConfigBackup application in your PSP, and select to restore, this will take the backup that was done of the network config that was done automatically during the downgrade.
Otherwise go to the next step.
You should now be left with a 1.50 PSP ! ENJOY !
