Homebrew is the term for home user created software, be it applications, games or emulators, that can be run on your PSP. This software is executed on the PSP by placing the software on a Memory Stick Duo, and launching it from the PSP's main menu.
To put it more simply, you can have more fun with your PSP than you thought you were having before. If you think youre skeptical about homebrew, thats fine. Although homebrew is Extremely fun, there are dangers to using homebrew. This forum is one of the best places to find out which homebrew is best and safe to use. The firmwares that can run Homebrew the easiest are 1.5 (of course) and any of Dark_Alex's Custom firmwares whether its DA CF POC (Dark_Alex's Custom firmware Proof of concept) or his SE (Special edition) or OE (Open Edition) Firmwares. Im not going to get into how to run homebrew on firmwares 2.8 and lower, because if you still have 2.8, You need to downgrade today.

When you find homebrew downloads these days, they will more than likely be already formatted for a 1.5 PSP. All you need to do is extract the files to X:PSPGAME (OR GAME150, if youre using DA-CF SE, or OE) Folder. There are two folders to copy. As an example, I will use an SNES emulator. The two folders you need to copy are named "SNES" and "SNES%". As long as they are copied in that order, you will be running homebrew in no time.

There are some homebrew you find, that is only one singular folder. (This can only be run on DA SE or OE) Just place that folder in the GAME folder, and you will be gravy.

There are MANY other ways to run homebrew (On firmwares not specified here), but this is the easiest, and most efficient you'll ever come across (So far anyway), I guarantee. Hopefully, This answers the "What is homebrew? How do I use it?" questions, because it gets asked a LOT around here.

***Warning*** As ive said before, the homebrew on this site has been known to be very safe. However, there are always risks with running foreign code on your PSP. We here at TVG take no responsibility to damage done to your PSP, or the wall you take your anger out on.

What are the risks with v2.0 firmware?
Have I still got a chance of "bricking" my psp if i install the homebrew apps?

Please don't flame the noob, I have read the post and the risks of bricking the psp, but this to me seems like simply copying files on to the memory stick without affecting the firmware.

Sorry for the late reply.

To answer your question, copying files onto your memory stick shouldnt effect it at all. Its when you execute these files that you have a risk of bricking the PSP. If you only download the homebrew from a reliable source like us here at PSPF, you will be absolutely fine. I promise.

Everything you could possibly imagine.
~Emulators
~Fancy file playback that even the 2.6 can't.
~Utilities like PSPDA
~Custom user-made games like PSP Revolution
~Soon, a downgrade from 1.5 to 1.0, and custom firmware will be ceated/

Did you even bother to read the post?
It can't get any simpler than that.

yeaa but what does it do?

Did you even read the first post. I know this is the nOOb section, but at least take the time to read other posts. The initial post is very clear if you'd take the time to read and understand it. If there is a specific question, then find the section/thread that deals with that problem, and post your concerns.

There is no one download containing all homebrew. There is however a link containing most.

correct you cannot downgrade from 2.6 but you will be surprised how much homebrew 2.6 PSPs can run now. just go to Fanjitas site, has to be run though GTA though

Okay, first of all, even as it appears to be clear on specifically what to do, I am indeed facing alot of difficulties in doing this, yes go on about calling me a noob and whatever you want to call me, but I need to get the job done, furthermore, can someone take the time and make a faq, step by step on what you need to do. Im sure that will help alot of the confused people and myself ofcourse. Thank you, your help would be much appreciated. :)

Desmond,

It would help to know which firmware you have. Scroll over to System Settings, and then down to System Information. Also, this isnt really the thread for discussing how to get all this stuff running. Reply back with your firmware version, and we'll get you going in the right direction.

Wonkizzle

You have 2 choices. You can upgrade, and use Fanjitas 2.0 Homebrew, or upgrade and the downgrade back to 1.5 for easier, more compatible homebrew. Its up to you.
