I have been playing around with Vista Premium for a couple days now and I decided to make a review for those of you who havent tried it yet.
Whats different?
Vista offers alot of effects. When you have a picture on your desktop or in a folder you can actually see what the picture is without opening it. I really like this effect. The multiple screens in 3D are pretty cool too. This allows you to scroll through all the open pages and makes navigating alot easier to do.
Basically almost everything has changed as far as where to look to find things that were on XP. Everything has been catagorized into their own areas. Changing wallpaper, mouse pointers, themes, etc, are now in the "Personalize" area. This can make it frustrating at first because your not going to be able to just jump on and start making changes. You have look for what your wanting to change all over again. Much different than XP.
The new internet explorer is pretty sweet as well. A much nicer interface and again icons and such are located in differnt spots.
Vista also offers a nice side bar that allows you to put a clock, weather, cpu usage, etc, on the right side of the desktop. You can even change its opacity to make it fade out a bit.
"Vista's search does what it is supposed to do. It searches files, finds them, and lists them. The biggest problem remains the fact that the actual start menu contents get replaced by your initial search results. If you press enter after entering your query, an Explorer window shows you all the results, including tabs to see the results per file type. You can obviously save the query; however, when you open this query later, Vista will not give you the search pane (which allows you to view by filetype, as mentioned). You'll have to enable it by hand; not a showstopper, but sloppy, still."
The pictures on Vista seem to be alot more clear, everything looks like high defintion.
I think there is a lot more to Vista than there is to XP.
Disadvantages
There are many programs that dont work on Vista. Luckily Ad-Aware and AVG 7.5 do work.
The Vista OS comes with a benchmark that gives your computer a rating. 5.9 is the highest. The games that come with Vista require a PC to have 2.0 but recommend a 3.0. Now my PC is pretty beefy and only scores a 4.3/5.9. The good thing about this score is that it rates your machine on your lowest score. You are rated on gpu, cpu, memory, hdd speed, and gaming graphics. Lucky for me if I change my 2.6ghz FX-55 to the FX-60 my score jumps up to 5.2/5.9. This may be a disadvantage to some people.
Vista will ask you for permission on almost everything that you do. Very annoying. You know that commerical with PC and Mac? Ya its just like that.
Also the desktop icons are too big and I have yet to find a way to change their size. Another thing that was very easy to do on XP.
Overall
I think this is the best OS ever made. Its very easy on the eyes and once you learn where everything is, navigating is a piece of cake. Right now I rate this OS 90/100. Once a service pack is released I think this OS will be perfect. But right now if you are wanting to switch I highly suggest you partition your drive for both Visa and XP.
