I need help!! HDD issue

Alright im trying to fix my friends computer - when he turns on his comp i hear this clicking noise inside it from the HDD so im firuging the HDD is fucked up.

So he bought a new HDD a 100gb - now i know how to put it in and stuff but how do i put windows and format it and stuff? Do i just put it in a turn it on and it will prompt me to do it all or what?

Stick the Windows XP CD in the drive and follow the instructions. If it doesn't boot from the CD go into the BIOS and move the CD drive up the boot order. Then follow the instructions.

Yea you gotta have the CD bud. Gotta make sure the cd drive is select to boot first and it'll ask you to press any key to boot from the CD. Once you get you'll format the drive (choose NTFS) and then it'll copy the install files over to the hard drive and reboot. Let me boot off the hard drive this time and it'll load the Windows XP install.

Shit what if he doesnt have the disc?? He is the system recovery disk will that work?
