No. Sony will NEVER completely be wiped out. I'd stick by that if my life depended on it. Sony has many levels of electronics, some they succeed, some they don't. Simple. Some departments might not do as well as others, but it is just like Nintendo. There are always those diehard fans.

Ver good post Joystick

Sony wont be wiped ou for a longlong time!

They have so many things on the market that sell lots and the name 'Sony' is one of the worlds best leading electronics organisation, So I dont think it will happen. Just my opinion but i think it will be the same as many other peoples thoughts!

Thanks

Exactly, all their other level of electronics are doing miserably on the market. Sony's loss keeps on increasing. And those diehard fans are not enough to overcome the loss and have a good income. But again, thats my opinion, Sony is always one of those type, who sit at the back of the class, wont raise their hands and when the test comes, they dominate the answer sheet. But again, Im a Sony fan too and I also think they wont be wiped out, I cant wait for the PS3 to come out. If the PS3 is what they say its like. The 360 will be thrown away by most microsoft fanboys. So again, I dont know.

Actually kids, this is alot more deeper than the Playstation. Sony have real problems from elsewhere in the company which means that they are placing all their eggs into the Playstation basket. They are riding on the fact that it will sell like hotcakes.

Electronically, Sony are loosing ground to their rivals. TV wise, they are being muscled out by some of the larger and TV only companies. So Sony focused on the music market. Only for their walkman brand to be destroyed by the IPOD and for IPOD to get 85% of the MP3 Market. With Blu Ray drives being sold for £1000 in the UK, how can they hope to make money on a machine they are likely to sell for between £400-£500 including the blu ray drive in the Playstation?

I think what is more likely to happen is that they sell like hot cakes, but then they don't get used as much.

Surely sony wouldnt make a product that they would be losing money from?

I dont think they are that stupid?

Thats how consoles work, sell the hardware at a loss, make money from the games.

This could very well kill Sony. Look at Sega. The Dreamcast killed them. They rushed a system out without notice and charged $400 a pop. Sony is delaying their system and the price is already $400 and looks like it may be $450-$500 now. And if Sonys machine isnt significantly better than the 360 then who is going to buy it? This can definately hurt Sony.

But Sega was in the video game business, and ONLY the video game business. Sony's infastructure stretched over TV, DVD players, MP3, CD players, basically everything. JUST because the PS3 might not be a success at launch doesn't mean they'll have to file for bankruptcy.

if this does somehow kill sony, bye bye psp. there would be no online play, and no more new games.

sorry to break this to you but Sega isn't dead, they don't make hardware, but they sell plenty of software. even if by some miraculous feat the ps3 doesn't sell well it wont kill Sony

Ummmm ya. Sega who was once the king of consoles now only makes some games now. lol Sega doesnt make consoles. THEY ARE DEAD! Besides the sega games suck anyways.

And nobody is really saying that Sony will die. The PLAYSTATION could die. As in no more Sony consoles.

In my opinion, I think the Playstation 3 will be the best invented console ever. But again, Time will tell. I dont think the Playstation Series will end, unless sony stops continuing the series

IMO Sony won't be ruined any time soon. You need to look at the larger picture, outside of the U.S., Sony dominates. They produce so many different types of products i've lost count. If you ever go to japan there are so many different sony products there that they dont produce here, and they make so much money off that. here in the U.S. not everyone will buy their dvd players cuz there are those cheap ass brands that make cheap ass dvd players that suck for people to buy. but when you go out of the country, again like japan, their stuff is EVERYWHERE, you can't get away from it. There is no way that sony will get ruined anytime soon. Even if the PS3 is a failure, there are still more things that they can get backed up by, how do you think they have suceeded for such a long time? They have a great line of products, computers, phones, tv's, games, anything you name it! heck, they should even come out with their own shoes and clothes.

But once again dude, that is the problem. Sony is turning liquid in those markets. Theyre struggling to hold the markets of Japan. Playstation is their only hope. And they did come out with their own shoes and clothes. I have them.

you don't seem to get my point, the very fact they are still selling games means they aren't dead. the fact they don't make consoles or you don't like the games is irrelevant, the fact they are still making games and they are selling well means they aren't dead

the PlayStation franchise wont last forever, eventually the mass market will move away from it onto a new line of consoles, but i don't think this will happen that soon. i believe there is still life in the old dog yet

to tell you the truth blue ray discs are better at playing, and better at holding better games than dvd roms, it will in fact insure the quality of games we are able to play on the ps3, thats somthing that sony is about, quality!

If you read the article then it says for the first 3 years sony will lose about 2 billion dollars on selling consoles if they dont make at least half of that back in the 2 years after that then i think they might discontinue playstation. Look at the PS2 it has lasted for a long time and people still buy new games for it. This means that Sony is still making money off of it. Also people will probably be playing their ps2s along with ps3s as they havnt died yet. Also this shouldnt be a problem for the PSP as of now because problems shouldnt arise in the near future of about 5 years.

a little chunk of the article for your viewing pleasure

However, one aspect of gaming that is often ignored, but can become a major issue is load times. Ask any Sony PSP owner what annoys them most about the portable console and you are sure to hear about it's dreadful load times. Gamers are an impatient breed and if Sony frustrates hardcore gamers - and developers, for that matter - it could greatly damage it's reputation with the group that will comprise PS3 early adopters.

Until now, it's been widely assumed that the Blu-ray drive that will make it's way into the PS3 will be single-speed. If true, this choice could be disasterous. Blu-ray single speed transfers data at a constant rate of 36Mbps (Megabits per second) or 4.5 MBps (Megabytes per second). Sound impressive? Think again. DVD single speed is rated at a little over 1.32MBps max. A 12X DVD, such as the one in the Xbox 360, transfers data at rates between 8.2 and 16.5 MBps for an average of around 13MBps. This article from Gamespot provides all the details on transfer speeds, but simple math should show that there are some serious concerns looming with a single speed Blu-Ray drive. So, all things being equal, a 20 second load-time on the Xbox 360 would equate to just under 60 seconds on the PS3!

In order for Sony to bring load times into the same range as the Xbox 360, it would have to use at least a 2X drive (which would transfer a little faster than a 12X DVD's minimum speed) or a 3X drive (which would closely resemble a 12X DVD's average transfer rate). Since Blu-ray is a new technology, it's a certainty that the faster speeds will increase the base cost of the PS3, which leads into the next point.

all that power but very slow load times, hopefully this will be sorted out before launch. if it isn't however then this may become a serious issue

Personally I give not a single thought to the price, the graphics, whatever. Any true gamer knows games make the system not the amount of "my graphics are better than your graphics" and "get a life you MDJHdfhasofdihsd......" If somebody isnt stupid and knows games are far better than graphics will see that if the games are worth the high price, then they'll buy it. if the system has a good quality base of games, money is no object to true gamers.

And to the person who said sega games suck.... DIE DIE DIE lol sonic the hedgehog, super monkey ball, feel the magic, rub rabbits, condemned, 2K6 Sports, got their games are amazing.
