yea the controllers look strange at first and you think "hows that going to work, there aren't even enough buttons".

but then when you see the nunchuck attachment adds a control stick and shoulder buttons, you think better but how are we going to survive without another control stick. it has something better, a sensor that could do the job better than any second stick.

the only problem i foresee is that they have been saying since they announced it that they want to appeal to a wider audience but by changing the name to Wii ironically they have done the opposite. the average person will see the name and just opt for a 360 or a PS3

Hmmmm the leader of the videogame market WORLD is definately Nintendo. Overall they have probably profited 20x more than Sony or Microsoft in terms of gaming. I doubt Nintendo will ever get knocked out of 1st. However, Yes the Wii is very much underpowered compared to the 360 and PS3. Its basically a Xbox with a slight more power. But the Wii has the what could be the greatest controller ever made. (hopefully) Nintendo also has Zelda, Mario and Metroid. 3 reasons why Nintendo will always rule. If Nintendo still made N64 games I would definately still be buying them. I would love a Mario 64 two or a Banjo-Kazooie 3.

I'm definitely most excited about the Wii. The Nintendo DS pratically ressurected me back into gaming. Wii will definitely bring me back into console gaming even more.

PS3's price is a tad too steep... a lot of useless features stuffed into that box, regardless I'll be getting two to sell the other and i'll probably make my money back.

I don't agree with his opinion on Nintendo either, but his facts are pretty much correct. Sony is the market leader in the console world, and the Xbox360 and PS3 are more powerful than the Wii. And as for which has more hype, well that depends on who you listen too. All I know is that the Wii has me far more interested than either the PS3 or the 360.

As a retailer for 10 years I can tell you that Sony outsold Nintendo 10-1 easily in my store. It's the same for places all over. Nintendo does very well with their portable but the DS has solid competition from the PSP. I left retail end of 2004 so I can't speak for the past year.

My first hand knowledge tells me those numbers are correct. They tabulate this type of info at NPD but it's info only available to subscribers which most media outlets use.

Sony sells to the mass market but Nintendo has an extremely loyal fanbase. Nintendo released fewer games but with more quality. A Nintendo first party product would ALWAYS sell well vs a Sony made game which was a hit or miss. MS is gaining and has been steadily for a couple years. Those figures seem pretty current to me and the article was from 2 weeks ago. If you go to E3 you can see by the floor itself all the games and products for Playstation...while the game support is lackluster for the Nintendo. Nintendo wants more money from the developers to create a Nintendo console game and many developers skip making them because in the end they don't sell well for the console.

For example at my store Madden every year it comes out. This is how I would have ordered it for the 3 systems.

Playstation 2- 48 copies
Microsoft Xbox - 20 copies
Nintendo Gamecube - 4 copies

If you talk to many retailers the same ratio holds true for just about any game released on all 3 platforms. Often games are not released on the N systems at all.

These are FACTS..while you can argue quality vs quantity all day long you can't dispute who the #1 system is and the market leader. It's Sony and has been for about 8-10 years now.

That articles says DS sold about 4.2 million systems in the US market vs the PSP which sold 2.5-3 million. Yeah that's a lead but it's getting slimmer. In Japan the DS is HUGE and sold over 5 million units there. That articles says the DS is the fastest selling system in Japan EVER! This could also be because previously system allocation has sucked. The DS imho is a cheap system in comparison to the PSP hence it's readily available while the PSP was very difficult to obtain for many months.

I like all systems but truth be told sales are sales and facts are facts. Nintendo is a good company fairly well run but it's questionable how much longer it can remain a top player. The reason the DS does so well (any N system really) is because of Nintendo First Party games that are not available on other platforms. Animal Crossing and Nintendogs made the DS HUGE! If both of these games were on the PSP or if Mario was on the Playstation would anyone really buy a Nintendo console? And the reason they don't is because Nintendo is power control hungry which they label "quality control". Again you can argue a lot of points with that one but I admit Nintendo games are freakin fun and it's all I ever buy for my kids.

The nomad ROCKED! If it wasn't for it's poor battery life and massive size it would have done better. I used to play my Nomad daily at home before I went to bed. GameGear is mediocre with it's bad game selection. If you had the Master Gear adapter you could also play Sega Master System games on it. Game.com was pure sheet. TG Express was probably the best most expensive HH ever created before the PSP at least. Active matrix screen and a fairly good library of games to play and also the TV adapter made it one of the best ever. The AtariLynx was an early entry that could have gone against the GameBoy if it had a better game selection. However Nintendo had Tetris and pretty much dominated from that game alone. Everyone wanted tetris and in black and white too. Klax just wasn't as good. The Wonderswan pretty much never came stateside and I don't think Bandaii could have done well with it here. They just had no game support selection. I talked to Bandaii reps and they are fairly clueless. They run their company as if it's a toy company not an electronics entertainment one. Oh well..that's my take on the lot.

Well most of the failing systems all had one thing in common. Very bad Battery Life.

I liked the TurboGrafx EXPRESS because I was a big fan of the TurboGrafx16 at the time. I liked being able to play Splatterhouse on the go. But I also hated going through my handful of used batteries in the back of the car struggling to find some that will give the system just a few more minutes of power.

The Game.COM was a pure joke, I remember openning it up as a gift and going "WTF is this?". It had a touch-screen, but very mediocre games.

The Atari LINX sucked because of it's shitty game selection.

GameGear had a few good titles, but was a battery eater as well.

The Gameboy, I didn't have to change batteries on it that often. It would always make it on the way to school even when it was running low on batteries. It had a great library of games, and it was bundled with Tetris.

Let's face it Nintendo has been dealing with hand-helds for awhile, it has met competition and beat it several times.

Now, I give Sony Props for the PSP. I honestly didn't think it would survive at all, it may not be selling as much as the DS, but it's leaving an impression.

Oh.. Does anyone remember the Cybiko? Haha that was an interesting system for a short time. You got to download very mediocre games online for free on it.

if by that you mean which will have the best graphics then obviously the ps3 will win that and judging by the sales of the ps1 & ps2 it is sure to sell more than the other 2 systems, possibly combined.

but graphics don't make a system better, it will be the most expensive of the 3 for hardware and software will probably cost in the region of the 360 games. when the Wii is released it will probably cost less than half of the ps3 and the games will be cheaper too.

Alright, SONY PS1 was succesful and PS2 was even more.

But c'mon people, most of the anticipated titles for the system aren't even going out be out on Launch.

You expect most people to go pay $600 for a system with nothing good on it People bought the PS2 as a DVD player in the beginning, because DVD players were still fucking expensive as hell. PS2 was less than a price of a major DVD player and it was a gaming system.

But I don't think people are going to buy it for the Blu-Ray just yet, we're still on DVDs and I think it's going to be a few more years until Blu-ray really starts to dominate.

Look at the many people here that defend the wii even though the specs are rubbish, in fact i'm sure I read on here that the original xbox had a better spec than the wii. The truth is that Nintendo could make a great game with cardboard and duck tape. Specs means nothing. Nintendo does gear it's game toward a kids audience but there is no shame in that. The games are fun pure and simple. I get more back for the buck imho with N systems. With Sony I get selection and twitch games that I can buy ever week. With N you get 2 or 3 GREAT games per year that are must haves and that's pretty much it. You wait for the new Zelda or Mario patiently. I find replay value on many of the N games to be superb.

Nintendo has a formula and they don't mess around with it too much. Whether long term this is a good decision is hard to say now.

But you are forgetting something.

The Gamecube had little 3rd Party support, that was it's biggest faults. Now it seems a lot of developers are quite interested in developing for the Wii. It's also very easy and affordable for developers to do it.

What you said may stay true to GameCube but that's only because GameCube had almost 0 decent 3rd Party Support.

On a final note, games don't win without the specs, you need an equal balance of both. If GTA 3 + had the gameplay of ps2 and specs of ps1 it wouldn't be successful. Specs need games and games need specs. (sounds gay but you know what I mean)

Still. The point i'm making is that you can't judge a next-gen console by it's previous. Don't base the Wii's future entirely on Gamecube's history.
