Update 2.10

Voice Changer feature:

You can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.

Music

You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3 system to enhance audio playback.

Video

DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played.

Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported.

[BD Data Utility] has been added.

Update 2.00

The PLAYSTATION®3 System Software version 2.00 update includes the following:

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that the next system software update for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system, firmware version 2.00, will be available on Thursday, Nov. 8, and will add several features that enhance the user experience. Firmware 2.00 will deliver exciting new features such as Remote Start, which upgrades the Remote Play feature by enabling users to turn on a PS3 system remotely with their PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system from an Internet hotspot, and a new Information Board, where users will find the latest PlayStation® news and updates in a scrolling window on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) menu screen. Other new features include the addition of custom themes that personalize the XMB interface, the ability to build music and photo playlists, and the creation of a PLAYSTATION®Network category on XMB.
“PLAYSTATION 3 is constantly evolving and this latest firmware is a great example of how we can make existing features such as Remote Play even more userfriendly. We’re also delivering entirely new offerings that increase our touchpoints with consumers through the new Information Board,” said Eric Lempel, Director, PLAYSTATION Network Operations, SCEA. “These types of updates show the value of PS3 goes beyond your initial purchase, and we’re continuing to evaluate new technology upgrades and consumer interests to develop future firmware updates throughout PS3’s lifecycle.”

Remote Start

Since May 2007, the Remote Play feature has enabled users to stream photos, videos, and music stored on their PS3 hard drive or PC onto a PSP system, whenever their PSP system is connected to a wireless Internet access point (or hotspot). Consumers have also been able to use PS3 system as a gateway to remotely access media files stored on their PC with their PSP system, all through PS3’s Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) capability. Now users no longer have to leave their PS3 system on when they leave home, as the new firmware update adds Remote Start, allowing a PSP system to remotely turn on a PS3 system from a hotspot. Once they’re done using Remote Play, users can also turn off their PS3 with their PSP. This delivers greater flexibility to the Remote Play feature and makes accessing media files on-the-go easier than ever.

Information Board

A new Information Board enables SCEA to communicate directly with PS3 users, delivering information to XMB on a regular basis about new content added to PLAYSTATION®Store, software releases, hardware news, firmware details and other updates. The Information Board consists of a window on the upper right corner above the XMB that scrolls through the headlines of each item. Users can read the entire “story” or update by clicking on the Information Board icon under the Network category. Some Information Board updates will include a Web site link for more information, which the user can click on to view using PS3 system’s browser. Moving forward, the Information Board will be a valuable communications tool that allows SCEA to push real-time news and updates to PS3 owners. Users can turn the scrolling window on or off by clicking on the Information Board icon under the Network category and changing the setting.

Other Feature Upgrades

Custom themes – Users can now personalize their XMB by choosing custom themes, which change wallpapers and icons at one time. A variety of themes will be available for download from PLAYSTATION Store and www.playstation.com, including themes related to specific titles or franchises. Users can also create their own themes and share them with their friends. Instructions on how to build personalized themes will be posted soon on www.playstation.com.
Music and photo playlists - Users can now create playlists for photos and music stored on their PS3 system. This new feature makes it simple to create personalized soundtracks of favorite songs or share slideshows of favorite photos, all grouped according to the user's preference.
PLAYSTATION®Network category - A PLAYSTATION®Network category icon has been added to XMB, where users will now access PLAYSTATION®Store and Account Management settings. PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve and this dedicated category reflects SCEA's focus on current PLAYSTATION Network offerings, primarily PLAYSTATION Store, and several new initiatives planned for the future. The current Network category icon will continue to include the Remote Play feature, Internet browser, Folding@home™, and online instruction manuals.

Firmware 2.0 is a RUMOR

"Strange. We're not really sure how to take this bit of info, but it seems as if yesterday's "Sneak Peek" of the PS3's FW 2.0 changelog was nothing but a rumor after all. Or is it? The news comes from EuroGamer, who says that Sony's been all hush-hush about the leaked notes that've been doing rounds over online forums and sites.

According to EuroGamer, Sony's only statement regarding this issue is that they're dismissing the leakage as "speculation." Details of this dismissal from Sony are sketchy, and it seems that only EuroGamer has reported on it. To what extent is the mysterious "FW2.0 changelog" debunked by Sony? If the release notes are just "speculation," then that means what exactly?

If there's anything good to come out of this (and if we take EuroGamer for their word on it), then there's but one thing positive about Sony's statement. They denied the changelog as speculation... But they didn't deny the fact that they're coming out with a firmware update. There's a bit of difference there. And as far as we're concerned, we're still going to have to play the Rumor card again.

Rumor of a rumor... Would you believe that?"

Firmware:

By the end of this week the new new firmware will be up for download. This firmware makes it possible to put up your own wallpapers, music to listen while playing games and DVD’s and PS2-games will be upscaled.

I hope this happens

"Version 1.80 can now upscale PlayStation and PS2 games as well as DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set. This upscaling capability is normally associated with top range DVD players, and now PS3 owners can enjoy their games and movies in 1080p HD.

The newest firmware also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet. Please note that this requires a PSP that has firmware 3.50, which will be available at the end of this month. Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to view and play media content stored on DLNA3-enabled devices (PCs, laptops) on their PS3.

Other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on the PS3's hard drive or on inserted storage media on a variety of Epson printers. PS3 owners can start upgrading to firmware version 1.80 on May 24."

Sounds like a crappy update to me......

Basically by changing the options that I listed the colors are more vibrant. The white is also whiter if your running HDMI and your TV is capable. The games really look alot better.

1.90 Info

Customization is one new feature: you can now personalize the wallpaper on your XMB with a photo. This was one of the top three requests we received via the blog’s contact form. When viewing a photo, simply bring up the options screen by pressing the triangle button and selecting “set as wallpaper” from the options displayed. Additionally, you can now change the order of the games displayed under the game icon on the XMB.

Another new feature focuses on added communication elements: When you’re sending messages to friends on PLAYSTATION Network, you can now use emoticons. We’ve added a bunch of emoticons that can be easily accessed from the virtual keyboard. Also, another cool addition is, when an avatar is displayed during voice/video chat, the avatar will move in response to audio.

Finally, on the more technical side, you can now play AVCHD videos saved on a Memory Stick or digital video camera, and we’ve added the ability to upscale audio CD output from your PS3. Now, there are two requirements for this feature: the device you’re outputting to must support a sampling frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz, and your PS3 must be connected to that device with an HDMI cable or digital optical cable.

Oh, and one more thing: you can now eject discs using your controller by selecting “Eject Disc” in the options menu after you push the PS button.

Several other minor options will be included in 1.90 including a few new display options that will allow you to adjust your display while playing PlayStation, PlayStation2 and Blu-ray movies. More info on these options as well as detailed info on the rest of the 1.90 additions will be available later this week. We’ll update this post with a link to that info when it’s available.

We’re working on additional features for our next update that will incorporate more of your feedback, so as always thanks for all of your support, and please keep those suggestions coming!

Firmware update 2.0 is supposed to release tomorrow. Check back tomorrow for full details on the update.

"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has finally sent out a press release announcing firmware 2.0 for the PlayStation 3 home video game console. The newest PS3 firmware will become available for download on November 8 and includes pretty much all of the features it was rumored to have.

Firmware 2.0 adds a few new features to the whole Remote Play functionality of the PS3 and the PlayStation Portable. Users can now turn their PS3s on anf off remotely using a PSP via the Remote Play function. Remember, Remote Play requires a PS3 with at least firmware 1.80 and a PSP running firmware 3.50.

Customization features have also been buffed up. PS3 owners can now create personalized playlists in both the music and photo sections. Additionally, the XMB's color and brightness can now be changed along with custom themes. New backgrounds will also become available on the PlayStation Network in the future.

Other features include an Information Board on the XMB to keep people up to date on the latest PlayStation news and a new PlayStation Network category and logo. Firmware 2.0 also includes Trend Micro Web Security, which will be free of charge until the end of April 2008"

You've been waiting for it. Firmware 2.00 is finally coming out this week: tomorrow, to be precise. This update, which has been a year in the making, was supposed to herald a new era of functionality for PS3. Many expected in-game XMB, additional video codecs, and more. However, we're saddened to say that none of that made the cut for this update. Here's what you'll be seeing tomorrow:

* Remote Start - As hinted by the last PSP firmware update, Remote Play has been enhanced with a brand new feature. Using Remote Start, PSP owners will be able to turn on and access their PS3's content from any wi-fi hotspot. For example, while vacationing, you may find out about an excellent Thursday Store update. You'll be able to turn on your PS3 and start downloading content to your PS3 while you're away. When you're done, you can turn the system off as well.
* Information Board - On the upper right-hand corner of the XMB, you'll see a scrolling list of headlines, hand-picked by Sony. Currently, these will all be related to video games and PlayStation. If a specific headline is particularly interesting, PS3 owners will be able to access Information Board from Network and see the content in greater detail. Importing your own RSS feeds is something that's planned for a future firmware upgrade. This feature can be disabled in Settings.

Gallery: PS3 firmware 2.00

Click for high-resolution image.

* Themes - PSP owners recently got access to the ability to create custom themes for their system. PS3 owners will also get this feature. Not only will you be able to customize your wallpaper, you'll be able to change the icons and fonts used in the XMB. An official theme creator will be available for the PC, so users will be able to create their own and share with their friends. Additionally, new themes will be made available on PlayStation.com and the PLAYSTATION Store. The best user-generated themes will also be featured on the official site.
* XMB Color Selector - The background of the XMB is no longer out of your control. The color of the XMB waves background can be selected in Settings.
* Music & Photo Playlists - You can now open and create your own playlists from within the XMB. For example, you can create a "Party Mix," which features your favorite songs from your PS3. Playlists cannot be imported from Memory Stick, and music and photo playlists cannot be combined. However, future firmware updates will improve this feature.
* Additional Sorting Options - Currently, music can be sorted by Artist and Album on the PS3. Additionally, users will be able to sort by Year.
* DualShock 3 support - You'll be able to turn on and off DualShock 3 support from the Settings menu on the XMB.

Click for high-resolution image.

* PLAYSTATION Network XMB group - The PLAYSTATION Network will get its own icon on the XMB, and will be featured between Network and Friends. Within the PLAYSTATION Network, you'll be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store and Account Management. "Other features" will be included in the future, such as Home.
* Canon printer support - Additional printers are now supported by the PS3.

That's all the updates found in PS3 firmware 2.00, which will be available tomorrow. When speaking with SCEA representatives, we found out that in-game XMB support is still in the works, and that additional video support is "almost definitely" happening. However, there's still no clear indication as to when these features will be incorporated. A regular schedule of updates is planned for the coming year, but specific details were not provided.

We're certain that many PS3 owners will be disappointed by how underwhelming the 2.00 update is, especially in light of the rumors that spread on the internet. However, this update provides the framework for a much meatier PS3 experience. For example, the PSN XMB icon will be expanded quite significantly over the next few months, as services like Home add much more weight to the online PS3 experience. Media is clearly important to Sony, and the addition of playlists is an important first step in the right direction. They've heard your wants and grievances -- we're confident that future firmware updates will offer even more functionality. 2.00 may not be the Second Coming that everyone expected, but it's certainly a beneficial free upgrade. Now, let's begin counting down to the next firmware update.

In light of the recent announcement of Lionsgate's BD-Live movies, the latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3 has been speculated to be released as early as this month already. We're not sure if it'll already have DivX technology, but here's what movie studios expect: the next PS3 firmware could pave the way for interconnectivity functions of BD-Live Blu-ray movies.

In the same conference in which Lionsgate made their announcement, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment executive VP Don Eklund expects that the new firmware will give the PS3 system a Profile v1.1 (PiP) upgrade.

This should include support for picture-in-picture interactivity that the HD-DVD camp already had for quite some time now as a standard. Eklund suggests that this firmware update would do good to roll out during this holiday season.

"We have an aggressive program underway to use network capabilities on our titles next year," stated Eklund.

Meanwhile, he also forecasts that another future PS3 firmware update could eventually bump up the machine into a Profile v2.0 for full BD-Live support, thereby upping the ante once again on the never ending format wars

hey al this is wake up call....

Sources close to vgwl.com have discovered that the wholesale price of PlayStation 3 consoles has dropped by $50 this week. What does this mean? It means that Sony is trying to cover their ass by denying a price drop so that current sales won't be hurt. So, either the wholesale price has magically dropped for no reason, or a price drop is coming within the next few weeks. We're willing to bet it's the latter.
