Bank holiday Monday sees the release of Microsoft's free 'spring update' for the Xbox 360, bringing with it a host of tweaks and improvements to the system.

Most significant will be the ability to chat with friends on Windows Live Messenger using a virtual on-screen keyboard or a new Xbox 360 Text Input Device, which will be available in the summer and is essentially a controller with a built-in qwerty keyboard and a new wired headset.

A number of interface tweaks will also be featured in the update and when a user sends a message a pop-up window will appear allowing you to quickly send a reply.

Some of the improvements featured within the update will include:

Enhanced family settings features for Xbox Live communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.

A new Xbox Live Marketplace blade lets Xbox Live members access the content they seek—whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States).

Updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow owners to see which Xbox Live Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox Live members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and achievements directly with all friends on their friends list.

A new option in auto downloads will provide access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.

New download controls provide access to viewing options by letting users fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace.

Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

Switchable aspect ratio will become available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).

Bookmarks will now be stored for each video that the user plays remembering the last location in the file as well as the aspect ratio.

Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content.

Skip forward and backward functionality has been updated to skip to the next or previous chapter. Each video is divided into 10 chapters allowing users to skip around video content.

No all Dash updates ask you to update if you do not then you cannot connect to live simple as that. Remember kids JUST SAY NO :-)

I have two consoles and I am not playing either one until I find out more info on the effects of the update.

The new spring update will disable the use of illegally copied games. This provides a safe online gaming area. The update will not prompt the user to download it but it will download automatically when the user turns on his/her console. When he/she puts an illegally modified disc in, an error message will appear and shut down the console.

From what i seen on xbox.com the update can happen between the 7th and the 11th....I thinks this is when we could see Forza 2 demo up..

Well keep in mind that they said it will be out the "week of 05/07", not on 05/07. They technically have until 05/13 before they're late.

they are probaly holding off because of the new firmware available that was dropped on sunday to counter attack the update. Now they are probably scrambling to get the updated fixed before they release it. My guess will be end of week.

Dashboard update: The countdown has begun
Ok, we’re getting closer. I just learned that the May ‘07 dashboard release is set to be released just a few hours from now. To be more specific, the LIVE Operations team expects to start rolling out the update after 0200 PT tomorrow morning. I’ll make another post when the team start the roll out.

The PR team has issued an alert, so it must be official…right?

For some reason i cant use msn on mine, it says you cannot use this feature from a childs account :| I wish i just lied on my passport but i had to have my mom use her passport to let me even send messages and such, any idea on how to get msn working?

I changed all my info but still no luck..

yeh but come on its msn.Microsoft have no problem allowing kids on there pc's go on it why not on the 360?

Another thing for me is that i have a mac and the streaming videos from my mac to my 360 has gone all weird now.I'am using this app 360connect by nullriver i checked there site and they say that they're working on it........

nope not yet.....

Major Nelson gave out some details about giving people the opportunity to change there e-mail linked with there gamertag.So this means i can link another msn name with an age set over 18 (hopefully)

I think they should just give the option in family settings to allow your child to use msn.

And m1indless, to activate the "Background Downloads" mode, you have to eanble it in the Console Settings < Shutdown < Background Downlaods.

We are working on a solution for the Fall Update.

But the FALL update! Lame.

As I said above, this issue will be addressed in the Fall update. Until then the only real option is to set up a new gamertag as an adult. It's not optimal and we realize that, which is why we are working on a solution for Fall.

I applied the update to both of my consoles today. Everything went smoothly but one HUGE problem. I can not use my profile freely between the two. My profile shows up just fine on my original box - the one it was created on- but when I plug my memory card into my other xbox it shows as no profiles. I check it out in the memory and it shows currupted profile, which results in me recovering my gamertag each time I play in the other room.
Any ideas?

EDIT: sorry for being stupid i didnt know you you had to changet settings on the dash anyway know ive changed it its a lot lot better. The colours are not washed out anymore and the picture is mores sharp
