What firmware should I get?

Ok its been a while since I even had a psp so I was wondering what is basically the "best" firmware now? Is it that 3.10 OE thing? What exactly is it anyways? That and can I use a psp with the different motherboard in it (I forgot the numbers) and down/upgrade to 3.10 OE? I plan on getting a psp in a few weeks and I need to decide if I should upgrade the fw to 2.71 and downgrade to whatever or whatever I need to do to get 3.10 OE.
Oo and what fw is north American psp's ship with now? So say if I bought a brand new psp that came shipped with v2.71 fw what should I go through to get 3.10 OE? Upgrade to v3.03 then downgrade to v1.5 then upgrade to 3.10 OE? Thanks for your help!

If you can get a psp w/ 2.71 that's great. Downgrade to 1.50 then you should be able to upgrade to either 3.03oeC(for ease of customization), or 3.40oe(for PSX compatibility). Just search different forums for people's opinions on the custom firmwares and then make your choice. Great thing about custom fw is that you can always down or upgrade trying different firmwares.

Sweet thanks man. So say I end up getting one with v2.8 fw, will I be screwed? I recall reading somewhere that like 3.03 or something can be downgraded or was it talking about the custom firmware stuff? Thanks!

O and what fw does the newest American psp's come shipped with? Just need to know whether or not to buy one from ebay or from gamestop! Thanks!

Ace, the latest fw is 3.40 you definately want to avoid this. Anything from fw 3.03 and up you want to avoid, cause there's no downgrader for these. You might get lucky though and find firmwares 2.81 and below. By my neck of the woods I'm still finding 2.71 at Target, Walmarts and "Toys". You can search here or at psp-hacks for a tutorial on how to spot the firmware by reading the outside of the box. It comes complete with pictures to show you what to do. Happy psp hunting!
