Microsoft is now backing their Xbox 360 with a whopping 3 year warranty which covers specific defects. You may also get a refund if you paid to get it repaired.

Perhaps the 33% failure rates are relative to this action?

So if your have already bought one you still only have a year warranty or does it get extended to 3 years prior to purchase

I believe it adds 3 years. So you will have 4 years of protection.

This is great news but I dont think they would "Add" 3 years to existing one they would just make it three because I have the standard one year and I think they would add 2 years to make it three but thats just my opinion. Fell free to prove me wrong. Good find +rep

According to the FAQ, this does NOT add to your warranties. It only serves as an extension to the original 1yr manufacturer warranty that ALL xbox 360 consoles come with upon purchase. So, if you have an extended warranty, that doesn't add to this. The extended warranties cover a broader scope of problems, basically ANY problem, whereas this extension of the manufacturers warranty only covers general hardware failure do to a manufacturers defect.

This is definitely a step in the right direction for Microsoft. It's good to know that IF my Elite (if I still have it lol) has a 3RROD error, it'll be replaced at no cost (or repaired).

makes my best buy warranty kinda useless now for 2 years. but at least its a replacement warranty if it does go belly up. but when i bought it it was still 90 days so it was peace of mind.

yea, the replacement will come in handy if your xbox 360 gets tossed in water, or some stupid **** like that lol.

Microsoft has said that it is facing a bill of more than $1bn to cover the cost of offering extended warranties, after failings with its Xbox 360.

The company admitted it had been forced to make "an unacceptable number of repairs" to the consoles after key hardware failed.

Customers who suffer the problems will now be given a free three-year warranty, the company said.

The failures are indicated by three red flashing lights on the console.

Microsoft, has not revealed how many of its machines have suffered the problem, but said the number was "bigger than we are comfortable with." Read more. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6275728.stm)

Finally! They admit to their mistakes.

I know what I have to do now. Not go to work and beat you to it! When I get home at nights, I go through all the tech and game news wires and if something grabs my attention, I'll post it here. I think that's what this site is missing, a news module.

Edit: I read your post but that was about MS extending their warranty. I wanted to emphasize on their new billion dollar debt. Ouch.

I read they have a 33% failure rate which sounds about right, I have 3 consoles and one of them failed LOL! At least they extended the warranty so now my other two will still be coverd!

so if I have one that has already failed can I send it in for free? Plus if I bought one in the US can I send it for repair in Europe?

You should call their customer service number and find that info out. ALL xbox 360's are currently still under warranty now that they've extended the warranty period to 3 years. Remember, the warranty is ONLY a manufacturers warranty, and specific to hardware failure that is shown by the three red rings. If it dies for some other reason, and isn't displaying the three red rings, chances are high that the warrant will not cover it. If you find out about the US console, repaired in Euro, please let us know, as that will be good info for other members that are in the same situation.

If you bought it at Best Buy, you may be able to exchange a broken one for a new one in-store. That's what they did to mine.
